Sickle cell disease asks a great deal of the children and families living with it, from managing pain to navigating school to planning for the years ahead. The Sickle Cell Disease Comprehensive Clinic at Cure 4 The Kids Foundation brings an entire team of specialists together so your child’s care stays coordinated, informed, and centered on them.
Our team works collaboratively to provide individualized care for patients living with sickle cell disease and related blood disorders. Through comprehensive evaluations, education, and long-term monitoring, our goal is to help patients live healthy, active lives while reducing complications and supporting overall well-being.
The Sickle Cell Disease Comprehensive Clinic (SCDC) is a coordinated clinic where children and patients with sickle cell disease and other red blood cell disorders are cared for by an entire team of specialists in a single visit. Because these conditions affect so many areas of life and require lifelong support, this team-based approach keeps every part of care working together.
These conditions can affect many aspects of a patient’s health, including pain management, growth and development, school performance, organ health, and overall quality of life. Because they require lifelong monitoring and support, our team works closely with patients and families to provide specialized care in support of every stage of life.
During a visit, families meet with several members of our care team in one coordinated appointment. This may include a pediatric hematologist, nurse practitioner, clinical pharmacist, physical therapist, genetic counselor, a social worker, and other specialists as needed. Together they address the medical, educational, emotional, and practical aspects of living with these conditions while building a personalized care plan.
Education and empowerment are at the heart of this clinic. Our team takes time to help patients and families understand their condition, recognize what their bodies need, and feel confident taking an active role in their own care. The goal is for every patient to live as fully and independently as possible.
Our team also helps families put school support in place. Working with our education team, we help arrange the accommodations a child may need during the school day (often known as a 504 Plan), from regular access to water and rest to other supports that help them stay safe and thrive in the classroom.
Comprehensive clinic visits are longer than a typical follow-up appointment—often around 2 hours—but they are designed to make care easier, not harder. Evaluations, lab results, and care discussions happen in real time, so your family leaves with a clear understanding of your child’s health and next steps.
Lab work is part of that convenience. Because Cure 4 The Kids Foundation has an on-site lab team, your child’s labs are drawn at the start of the visit and results are ready before you leave, so there’s no separate trip to a lab and no waiting days for answers.
Our pharmacy team spends meaningful time on medication education, reviewing your child’s treatment, checking for possible interactions, and making sure your family feels confident managing it day to day. During these visits, our team may also review school needs, explain newer treatment options, help families plan ahead for upcoming medical or dental procedures, discuss how to travel safely, provide guidance as patients prepare for the transition to adult care, and arrange any imaging or specialty referrals your child’s diagnosis calls for before you leave.
Sickle cell disease and other hemoglobin disorders require more than routine medical follow-up. Patients often benefit from ongoing monitoring, education, and support throughout childhood and into adulthood.
Comprehensive clinic visits help families:
and identify complications early
about new and emerging treatment options
and support services
so patients can proceed with confidence
their condition and long-term health needs
for maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle
Comprehensive clinic visits also allow our team to monitor potential complications associated with sickle cell disease and other hemoglobin disorders. Regular assessments help ensure patients receive appropriate screenings, preventive care, and timely interventions that support long-term health and quality of life.
