What is Pediatric Rheumatology?

Pediatric Rheumatology is a specialized medical field that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic diseases in children and adolescents. Rheumatic diseases encompass a wide range of conditions that primarily affect the musculoskeletal system, including joints, muscles, bones, and sometimes other organ systems. These diseases are often characterized by inflammation, autoimmune responses, and chronicity, and they can cause a variety of symptoms, such as joint pain, swelling, stiffness, and sometimes skin rashes, fevers, and fatigue.

Some common rheumatic diseases seen in Pediatric Rheumatology include juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), juvenile dermatomyositis, and vasculitis, among others. These conditions can be complex and require specialized care to manage effectively.
