Our Pediatric Palliative Care Clinic is the first in the state to offer palliative care services on an outpatient clinic basis. This is a needed resource for many families whose children are diagnosed with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions. While these pediatric patients will receive great care while hospitalized, families are often overwhelmed with complex medical decisions, as well as multiple specialists once they leave the hospital and head home. The Pediatric Palliative Care Clinic is designed to help these families navigate these medical decisions to provide the best possible quality of life for their child.
In addition, many of the integrative therapies offered at the clinic are also a benefit to those undergoing cancer therapies and other treatments.
Kathleen Gates, M.D. and Angela Berg, DNP, APRN, CPNP oversee the Pediatric Palliative Care Clinic at Cure 4 the Kids Foundation. Dr. Gates is the only physician with extensive experience in pediatric palliative and pediatric hospice care in the state. Berg was a registered nurse for 25 years before earning her doctorate in Nursing Practice in 2015.
Pediatric palliative care is not imminent, end-of-life hospice care. A child diagnosed with a congenital condition may live for many years. Palliative care helps the parents feel supported in making the best decisions which offer the best quality of life for their child, however long they may have them.
